Day 66: Getting robbed at the beach on our last day in Rome! (July 19):

Today, we decide to take a day trip to Ostia Antica – an ancient city about 45 minutes outside of Rome. We get there, it looks small and they are going to charge us like 23 Euro for each of the kids. We decide it’s not worth it and go to the beach instead. We drive around trying to find the beach to go to. We park, and walk to the beach. The sand is scorching hot! We left the sunscreen in the car, so Mom asked Dallin to go get it. He came running back saying a window is broken and things are scattered all over! We hadn’t even left the car more than five minutes ago. We bolted to the car, knowing we had Euro in there along with an I pad and our cameras. It turns out they popped the side window into the car and stole Benson’s credit cards and 300 Euros (which were hidden under a napkin on the side door). Luckily, the cameras, I pads, and my credit cards were still there! The pictures would have been irreplaceable, and without my credit cards, we would have no money. It is sad, but we are lucky that was all they took!
We drive back to the apartment and leave the kids with grandma and grandpa while we make phone calls, fill out police reports, and cancel credit cards - not quite what was on the itinerary for our last day of Rome.
We end the day with one final trip through St. Peter’s Basilica, and one last relaxing evening in the Vatican City.  My favorite part of St. Peter’s basilica is the famous Pieta statue by Michael Angelo – of Mary holding Christ’s crucified body in her arms. It evokes so much emotion – as one ponders how Christ’s mother must have felt as she watched him being tortured, mocked and crucified.
